What is an Arduino?  It’s not the latest shoe from Italy.  But it is a cool very inexpensive Single board computer designed in Italy.  This is digital technology that everyone can afford and use for both practical and far out projects.

Arduino Workshop

AliveIn the workshop you will be able to purchase a kit with everything you need: parts, software and plans to construct your own Arduino projects.  Technical expert with infinite patience will be on hand to assist!  We will do our best to help.  You will be able to select projects of varying complexity. There is a craft element to these kits.  The physical part of the project will mostly be foam board.  Some assembly required.  For extra credit apply your own graphics. We will have a PC with the necessary Arduino software.  But if you bring your own laptop you will have more time to play. This can be a team sport.  Having a lab partner can be fun.  Things to bring to the workshop if you can:

A laptop*.

A #2 pencil*.  Or similar with a large eraser.

A sense of adventure and creativity.

Coloring outside the lines is encouraged.

* Laptop not required to participate.

Edtric: Crash Course Electronics with Soldering Skills at the OCMMF

Would you like to build your own robot army to take over the world?  Everybody’s gotta start somewhere and you can get started on your first robot with Edtric at the OC Mini Maker Faire at UCI on August 17th, 2013!

Edtric’s Crash Course Electronics with Soldering Skills workshop will teach you some of the basics of electronics and soldering and at the end you’ll have your very own working robot.

To get an idea of what the workshop entails and to get a preliminary lesson in electronics, watch this video from Edtric:

At edtrication our purpose is to bring you affordable engineering hardware that allows the exploration of vast engineering and science applications. We like to think of our hardware as dynamic supplements going beyond the static pages of textbooks, theoretical problem solving, and the cubicle.

You explore new concepts. You experience new things.

Plus, you develop hands-on understanding. Our solutions are intended to remind you that even the largest and most complex systems start with simple concepts.

We hope you will find our hardware and accompanying lesson plans thought-provoking and motivating … able to ignite your ideas, excite your creativity, and inspire your imagination.

Let us nurture your inner engineer.

Come join us and Discover the Maker in Yourself!

Lego Sumo-bot Build and Wrestle

Do you know a youngster 7 years or older that likes Legos?  How about robots?  What about both together!

Every summer Mathobotix hosts a day camp program at the Beall Center for Art + Technology for budding engineers teaching the fundamentals of science, technology, engineering and math using teamwork and Lego components.

This year they are opening their doors on Saturday to offer a great one day program at the OC Mini Maker Faire!  Price is included with your ticket!

Sign-ups are open to kids 7 years and up.   Go to the Beall Ticket Booth  any time between 10:00am and 1:45pm to sign-up for the 2 hour workshop which begins at 2:00pm in the Beall.  At 4:00pm the kids can put their Sumo-bots to the test against each other in the Sumo-bot Competition at the amphitheater!

Learn to Solder!

We are happy to announce that the Learn to Solder kits are here!

And the DAT MakerSpace  group of UCI has agreed to run the Learn to Solder booth for us!

Soldering is the process of joining two or more pieces of metal using a third filler metal which has a lower melting point than the pieces being joined.    It is often used with electronics, plumbing, jewelry and many other applications.

Now, at the OC Mini Maker Faire, you can learn this simple but useful skill and make something to show off.   Purchase your kits through Eventbrite for just $2.50 and pick them up at the gate on the day of the event.   We’ll provide the soldering irons, solder and instruction.

Our little Learn to Solder kits came to us from the Maker Shed and were the official Learn to Solder badge at the 2012 Bay Area Maker Faire.

The LED eyes blink randomly and the battery is removable so you can turn it on and off.

Sorry, James, wrong kind of iron!

Rockets at the Beall

“WOW!!  That was so awesome!!”
Last November we heard this sentiment all day as kids (and adults!) made their own paper rockets and launched them from our homemade rocket launcher at the Beall Center for Art + Technology Family Day event.    The recipe for this easy to make launcher can be found in Make Magazine vol. 15.
On Saturday, aka tomorrow April 21st, at the Beall Center for Art + Technology we’ll be doing it again!
All the supplies will be there for making your own paper rocket so, start the count down and watch it launch high into the air.
Come on down and join us, there will be many other things to see and do at the Beall’s Family Day event.
Through Family Day activities, the Beall Center seeks to stir the imagination and motivate young people to delve into the basics of science, computer programming, and visual literacy—skills that will be critical to the next generation’s success in the workplace and in life.
