Help the OCMMF

WP_001347

Dear Friends in the Maker Community,

It has been our great honor to organize and present the Orange County Mini Maker Faire over the last two years.  It’s through your generosity, that we’ve been able to share the passions and talents of our wonderful and growing Maker community with more and more people. Because of the trust that you have granted us, we feel that it is our obligation to let the community have a say in deciding the future of the OCMMF.

The current OCMMF Organizing Committee consists of active volunteers who have taken on many leadership roles.  The Committee feels it is time to pass the reins to new blood.  We are seeking individuals who have the passion and time to carry on this amazing event.  There are critical leadership roles that must be filled as well as volunteer roles in various areas that may suit your skills, talents and interests. Unless we can fill the leadership roles, a future Faire is unlikely.

A detailed outline of the organizational structure necessary for a successful Faire can be found here: OCMMF Core Team Leadership and Organizational Structure v.3

Please join us at the OCMMF organizational meeting on March 27th, 7PM to find out more check the meet up site at http://www.meetup.com/Make-OC/

Currently we have scheduled the meeting at Del Taco 25521 Commercentre Dr. Lake Forest in the downstairs training room.

Help us Make this show happen. We won’t be able to do it without you.

What is an Arduino?  It’s not the latest shoe from Italy.  But it is a cool very inexpensive Single board computer designed in Italy.  This is digital technology that everyone can afford and use for both practical and far out projects.

Come learn how everyday people are taking control of the digital revolution.  Arduno’s are used in all kinds of projects: robotics, flying things, musical instruments, movie props, Halloween decorations and anything you can dream of.

Arduino Workshop

AliveIn the workshop you will be able to purchase a kit with everything you need: parts, software and plans to construct your own Arduino projects.  Technical expert with infinite patience will be on hand to assist!  We will do our best to help.  You will be able to select projects of varying complexity. There is a craft element to these kits.  The physical part of the project will mostly be foam board.  Some assembly required.  For extra credit apply your own graphics. We will have a PC with the necessary Arduino software.  But if you bring your own laptop you will have more time to play. This can be a team sport.  Having a lab partner can be fun.  Things to bring to the workshop if you can:

A laptop*.

A #2 pencil*.  Or similar with a large eraser.

A sense of adventure and creativity.

Coloring outside the lines is encouraged.

* Laptop not required to participate.

Planning for 2013

Now that we’ve (mostly) recovered from the success of our first ever OC Mini Maker Faire we’re beginning to look to the coming year.     On the top of the list is arranging a date that will not coincide with other major events that attract like-minded people.    With that in mind we’re considering the first couple of weeks in August 2013, anybody out there know of potentially conflicting events for that time frame?

Next on the list is expanding and improving our repertoire of activities, Makers and cool things to see and do.     There are some activities that we know we want but need help in making them happen, here’s a list of our top favorites:

  • Arduino workshop
  • Make Play Day (open making and free-build with piles of random stuff to create with plus tools, hot glue guns, tape, etc.)
  • Paper Rocket Make and Launch
  • Programming workshops (like Scratch, etc.)

What we need are volunteers or groups to help supply and run these activities so, if you or anyone you know might be interested please contact us at Info@OCMiniMakerFaire.com.

Also, if you have an idea for a great booth, we’d love to hear about it!

We are in the OC Weekly!

Rockets at the Beall

“WOW!!  That was so awesome!!”
Last November we heard this sentiment all day as kids (and adults!) made their own paper rockets and launched them from our homemade rocket launcher at the Beall Center for Art + Technology Family Day event.    The recipe for this easy to make launcher can be found in Make Magazine vol. 15.
On Saturday, aka tomorrow April 21st, at the Beall Center for Art + Technology we’ll be doing it again!
All the supplies will be there for making your own paper rocket so, start the count down and watch it launch high into the air.
Come on down and join us, there will be many other things to see and do at the Beall’s Family Day event.
Through Family Day activities, the Beall Center seeks to stir the imagination and motivate young people to delve into the basics of science, computer programming, and visual literacy—skills that will be critical to the next generation’s success in the workplace and in life.
