Come down to the OC Mini Maker Faire May 9th and check out some 3d printing by Deezmaker, meet the team, make something or get yourself 3d scanned.
Deezmaker 3D Printing retail shop & Hackerspace in Pasadena, Ca manufactures 3-D printer kits Bukobot & Bukito created by Founder Diego Porqueras. In 2012, Deezmaker was the 1st 3-D printer store on the west coast to open up and the second one in the country. Their in-store hackerspace gives 3-D printing enthusiasts a place to get together and find ways to innovate and create do-it-yourself projects (diy). Coming soon, Deezmaker will also open up their new showroom and workshop Makerspace added to their Pasadena location – May 3rd 2015.
Viking Robotics is a FIRST Robotics team located in Huntington Beach, California. Each year at Marina High School, over fifty student members work with adult mentors to design and construct a robot to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).
The team built their own robots by using CAD design software, drill and assemble parts. They also used a 3-D printer to make their own gears.
Meet the Viking Robotics Team #4276 and see the awesome robots they built for competition at the OC Mini Maker Faire – May 9th.

EarthLCD.com launched at the World Maker Faire 2012 in New York introducing it’s premiere product the Arduino compatible arLCD. At the first European Maker Faire CEO, Randy Schafer shook hands with Massimo Banzi, co-founder of the Arduino project, on an agreement to have the arLCD become part of the ArduinoAtHeart program.
The arLCD is a smart LCD featuring ezLCD technology combined with the Arduino open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. It is the easiest way to make a Internet of Things or Maker project with a touchscreen.
Come by the OC Mini Maker Faire May 9th and create your own EarthLCD Arduino project. Tickets on sale here.
One pleasantly sunny Saturday in Southern California a group of people got together, their mission: to hack, modify and re-purpose a few items and create a portable smoker. OC Mini Maker Faire Team Members Chris Reyes and James Howarth organized this project with design advice from advanced Smoker Maker, Barry Bates. Barry’s Mini Weber Smokey Mountain Grill is “an easy modification creating a competition tested, portable, compact smoker that can be used as an introduction to the world of home-built smoking”. If you’d like to have a go at building this smoker at home here’s the parts list.
Our venue was provided by Steve Trinidad who invited us to hold our Meet-up at his new makerspace facility, Urban Workshop. More about Urban Workshop in a later post.
James and Chris brought their smokers and cooked some food to give attendees a taste of what they were in for. Two chickens, corn and biscuits made a fine smoked meal along with an assortment of chips, bread, brownies and beverages.
Seventeen intrepid Makers showed up and three completed smokers went home.
Richard Platts took his home and gave it a coat of paint.
Join our Make:OC Meet-up group where you can join group projects, go on field trips or suggest your own field trip or project.
Until next time, keep on making!

Arduino Laboratory Workshop is coming to
OC Mini Maker Fair!
What is an Arduino? It’s not the latest shoe from Italy. But it is a cool very inexpensive Single board computer designed in Italy. This is digital technology that everyone can afford and use for both practical and far out projects.
Come learn how everyday people are taking control of the digital revolution. Arduno’s are used in all kinds of projects: robotics, flying things, musical instruments, movie props, Halloween decorations and anything you can dream of.
There is a large ecosystem of suppliers that can sell add-ons to make them do or react to all manner of interesting things.
The development Environment is free and simple to use. At this workshop you will actually build an Arduino project. Learn how to make techno cool gadgets Italian Style!
In the workshop you will be able to purchase a kit with everything you need: parts, software and plans to construct your own Arduino projects. Technical expert with infinite patience will be on hand to assist! We will do our best to help. You will be able to select projects of varying complexity. There is a craft element to these kits. The physical part of the project will mostly be foam board. Some assembly required. For extra credit apply your own graphics. We will have a PC with the necessary Arduino software. But if you bring your own laptop you will have more time to play. This can be a team sport. Having a lab partner can be fun. Things to bring to the workshop if you can:
A #2 pencil*. Or similar with a large eraser.
A sense of adventure and creativity.
Coloring outside the lines is encouraged.
* Laptop not required to participate.

Would you like to build your own robot army to take over the world? Everybody’s gotta start somewhere and you can get started on your first robot with Edtric at the OC Mini Maker Faire at UCI on August 17th, 2013!
Edtric’s Crash Course Electronics with Soldering Skills workshop will teach you some of the basics of electronics and soldering and at the end you’ll have your very own working robot.
To get an idea of what the workshop entails and to get a preliminary lesson in electronics, watch this video from Edtric:
At edtrication our purpose is to bring you affordable engineering hardware that allows the exploration of vast engineering and science applications. We like to think of our hardware as dynamic supplements going beyond the static pages of textbooks, theoretical problem solving, and the cubicle.
You explore new concepts. You experience new things.
Plus, you develop hands-on understanding. Our solutions are intended to remind you that even the largest and most complex systems start with simple concepts.
We hope you will find our hardware and accompanying lesson plans thought-provoking and motivating … able to ignite your ideas, excite your creativity, and inspire your imagination.
Let us nurture your inner engineer.
